Burton Charles 'Burt' Wood, age 44, of Gallipolis, died Saturday December 17, 2022 in Gallipolis. Born February 10, 1978 in Gallipolis, he was the son of Charles 'Chuck' Wood and Marjorie Gilliam Wood. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; Jim and Eleanor Gatewood Gilliam, and by Charles and Mary Ann Pickens Wood

Burt is survived by his Parents; Chuck and Marjorie Gilliam Wood, Brother; James Clayton Wood, Sister; Jessica (Michael) Weber, his significant other, Allie Troester, Niece and Nephews; Eric, Ryan, and Teagan Weber, Landon and Conner Wood; Uncles and Aunts, Randy (Sue) Gilliam, Gwen (Dennis) McGuire, Charles (Debbie) Gatewood, all of Gallipolis, June Scott of Bucyrus, Mike (Mary) Wood of Richmond, KY, Ann Carter of Las Vegas, and Will (Jennine) Wood of Gallipolis. Burt is also survived by numerous cousins and other family members.

Burt was a 1996 graduate of Gallia Academy High School where he was a 4-time track MVP, and lettered 3 years in football and 3 years in Wrestling. He was a member of the 1994 All State Championship football team. He excelled in discus and shot put, holding a state record in shot pit 62'10 3/4" for 11 years. He also competed in the Jr. Olympics. He was inducted into the GAHS hall of fame in 2016. He was on the track and field team 2 years at Tennessee before returning to Gallipolis and attending the University of Rio Grande, he later completed his Ohio Peace Officer Training at Buckeye Hills. He worked as a Corrections Officer for several years and was awarded the Corrections Officer of the Year award for 2005. While a corrections officer he competed in the Police and Fire Games where he received 4 medals in shot, discus, hammer, and javelin.  He had also worked at the Children's Center of Ohio, The City of Rio Grande, and was currently working for the City of Gallipolis.  He also coached track at the University of Rio Grande a job he loved and had done for over 20 years. He loved to hunt and also enjoyed history. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM.  Wednesday December 21, 2022 at the Grace United Methodist Church with Pastor Ray Kane officiating. Burial will follow in the Ohio Valley Memory Gardens. Family and friends may call at the Grace United Methodist Church on Tuesday December 20, 2022 from 6 to 8 PM. and at the church on Wednesday 1 hour prior to services.

Pall bearers will be: Chris Dotson, Allen Enyart, Alex Nichols, Zachary Collins, Dalton Duvall, and Daniel Everett.
