Ellen Marie Boggs
October 17, 1924 - November 11, 2021
Ellen Marie (Marie) Boggs was born on Friday,
October 17, 1924 in a house on Ohio Route 588
(Chillicothe Road) which is still standing and was a
former Stage Coach stop. She was called home from this
life on Thursday, November 11, 2021 at the age of 97.
She was the only child of Elman S. Maddy and Cleo
Elizabeth (Chic) Maddy. Her mother led her to faith in
Christ at the age of eleven and she was baptized by Pastor
George Sagan at First Baptist Church, Gallipolis, Ohio on
November 24, 1935. She graduated from Gallia Academy
High School with the Class of 1943.
Following graduation Marie moved to Columbus where she attended Columbus
Business University and lived in the YWCA for approximately two years while
completing her degree which involved 18 months of training, 8 hours a day, 6 days a
week. She then went to work for the Interstate Commerce Commission adjacent to the
State House in downtown Columbus. Eventually, she moved back to Gallia County and
was asked to serve as secretary to the President of the Kyger Creek Electric Plant. She
was married to her beloved husband Elmer on November 27, 1967. One of her great
regrets in life was that they only had 10 years together before Elmer died from cancer in
April of 1977. During their time together, Elmer was also working at the Kyger Creek
Plant and company policy did not permit husband and wife to both be employed there at
the same time, so she resigned her position and was quickly hired to serve as the
secretary to the President of the University of Rio Grande.
She and Elmer were among the 52 Charter Members who organized and began
Faith Baptist Church in 1970. Eventually, the church leaders recognized that they needed
a skilled secretary in the church office and asked her to step into that position. She
sacrificially resigned her post at URG and began her service at Faith Baptist in August of
1979 where she faithfully served for over 42 years, and with (counting associates) 9
different pastors, until the time of her home going this past Thursday.
She and Pastor Jim Lusher worked together for a little over 29 years during which
time she became a much loved part of the Lusher family. She was Grandma and GG
(great grandma) to Pastor Jim and Nancy's 3 children and 10 grandchildren.
She had an unbelievable work ethic, gave her very best in the service of her Lord,
and was amazingly generous and kindhearted in her support and backing for the church
family and the Savior she so dearly loved. After 97 true-blue years, her battle's done, her
victory's won!
Her tribute service will be held at Faith Baptist Church, 3615 Jackson Pike, on
Sunday afternoon November 14, 2021. Her viewing will be from 1:00 to 2:00 pm
Sunday with the service beginning at 2:00 pm. Pastor Jim Lusher and Pastor John
Patterson will be officiating. Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home is handling the
arrangements. Burial will follow at Mound Hill Cemetery, Gallipolis.
