Ellen Rose Schopis, age 95, of Columbus and formerly of Gallipolis, died Monday September 5, 2022 in Columbus, Ohio. Born September 15, 1926 in Jersey City, New Jersey to the late Joseph and Anna Beckerman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband Robert O. Schopis of 70 years, sister Anna (George) Wenz, brother John (Kathleen) Beckerman, and daughter, Barbara Bell. Ellen was a graduate of St. Aloysius High School, and received a B.S degree from Montclair State College. After graduation she worked as a chemist for Lipton Tea in New Jersey and later, having raised her family, was employed as a science and chemistry teacher at Gallia Academy High School in Gallipolis. Ellen was an active member of St. Louis Catholic Church, including many years of Girl Scout leadership. She had a great intellect and was well read and enjoyed a daily Sudoku challenge. She was an active participant at First Community Village as a contributor to the "Rusty Singers", the "Sew What" sewing group, and was a formidable trivia opponent. She excelled as a seamstress and in all areas of needlecraft.
Ellen is survived by her 5 children, Robert (Susan) Schopis Jr, Paul (Paula) Schopis, William Schopis, Mark (Erin O'Rourke) Schopis, Mary (Kevin) Morris, along with 9 grandchildren, Bryan, Seth, Beth, Joel, Kai, Michael, Tyler, Christopher and Nicholas, 3 great grandchildren, Anthony, Samuel and Alan and sister-in-law, Rosemary Schopis.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 am Wednesday Sept 14th at St. Louis Catholic Church with Father Thomas Hamm officiating. Burial will follow in St. Louis Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4 to 7 pm. Visitation will conclude with a Rosary Service.
