Jean Saunders, age 97 of Gallipolis, died Monday afternoon March 16, 2026 at Holzer Senior Care Center. Born May 31, 1928 in Gallipolis, she was the daughter of the late Gallias D. and Galena M. Barnett Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her husband, Robert R. 'Bob' Saunders who she married on August 14, 1949 and he preceded her on January 29. 2003, and by 2 brothers, Jim and Quenton Smith.

Jean was a graduate of Gallia Academy High School where she was a cheerleader. She worked and  retired from Gallia County Children's Services. She was a lifelong faithful member of the First Church of God, and was a believer, who understood the importance of supporting the young people of the community. She loved Gospel music and enjoyed watching the  Gallia Academy Blue Devils and the Ohio State Buckeyes.

She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Rusty and Connie Saunders of Gallipolis, grandson, Nick Saunders of Florida, brother, Tom Smith and by several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 12:00 PM. Thursday March 19, 2026 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Voss officiating. Burial will follow in Mound Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 11:00 AM until the time of service.
