Obituary

Karen Joy Waugh Brownell, age 81, of Gallipolis, went with the Lord on August 1, 2025, at her residence. She was born in Gallia County on January 25, 1944, to the late Amel Edgar Waugh and Lyla Beatrice Beaver Waugh. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her brothers, John Lee Waugh, Harlan Waugh, Gene Waugh, Amel Waugh, and Bill Waugh; sisters, Inez McGuire, Mary Lou Curry, and Connie Johnson; brothers-in-law, Robert Johnson and Hollis Mooney; and sister-in-laws, Loretta Swain and Inez Stocker.

A graduate of Hannan Trace, Karen was employed at City Loan for 12 years, and later worked at the Gallia County Auditor's office for 24 years. When not listening to Christmas music year-round, she enjoyed making Sunday dinners for her family, gardening, and working out at the Holzer Wellness Center. She was also an active member of the congregation and choir of the First Church of the Nazarene in Gallipolis.

She is survived by her husband, Dean Brownell of Gallipolis; children, Kelli (T.J.) Pasquale of Lewis Center, Kristi (Eddie) Smith of Gallipolis, Kathi (Mike) VanMeter of Syracuse, and Kayla (Kyle) Knudsen of South Milwaukee; grandchildren, Sierra (Eric) Holt, Kelsey (Austin) Marsico, Brooke (Max) Pasquale, Paige VanMeter, Bryce Smith, Alex (Ivy) VanMeter, and Rowan Knudsen; great-grandchildren Henry VanMeter and Penelope Marsico; brother Merrill (Della Mae) Waugh of Crown City; and sisters, Fern (Gene) Mooney of Gallipolis and Bea Johnson of Crown City.

Funeral services will be held from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on August 5, 2025, at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home, with Pastor Christian Scott officiating, followed by a burial at Centenary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be T.J. Pasquale, Eddie Smith, Mike VanMeter, Kyle Knudsen, Eric Farley, Austin Marsico, Max Helgreen, Bryce Smith, and Alex VanMeter.
