Russell D. Wood, age 91 of Gallipolis, died Saturday evening September 3, 2022 at Holzer Medical Center. Born May 26, 1931 in Vinton, he was the son of the late Hollis D. and Vivian E. Russell Wood. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his first wife, Ellen Conduff Wood who preceded him in Oct. 1979 and by a sister, Helen Evans.                                                                                                                                         Russell was a graduate of Washington Elementary School and Gallia Academy High School (the Golden Era class of 1949) and attended Ohio University for 2 years.  He served 4 years in the United States Air Force, where he was the star Air Force basketball player. He also studied and became a watchmaker. He was a former director of the First National Bank and the Buckeye Building and Loan Company. He was a member and Past Worshipful Master of Morning Dawn Lodge #7, the Gallipolis Elks Lodge #107 and the Grace United Methodist Church. He was an avid real estate connoisseur returning to Gallipolis to work alongside his father at Wood Realty and Insurance. He might forget a face but could tell you what property he had bought or sold to the residents of the area. He encouraged young people to buy their homes. He also had many rental properties and encouraged his wife and kids to invest in real estate. Russell and Roma traveled in Europe and wintered in Florida for many years but Gallia County was always their home and where all his family resided. His family and God were the most important things in his life.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Surviving him are his wife Roma Russell Smith Wood who he married in February of 1981, son, Allen C. Wood (Julie), Jane Ellen (Edward III) McGovern, step daughter, Lynn Angell, grandchildren, Abby Wood, Jenna Wood, Eddie IV (Megan) McGovern, Olivia (Matt) Mooney, Bradie Rose (Josh) Lewis, Kaitlin (Zac) Beaver, Bill Joe (Marisa) Angell and Cory Ralph (Morgan) Angell. Great Grandchildren, Caleigh and Edward McGovern V, Mac and Mia Mooney, Jase and Jennings Beaver and Samuel Angell. Also surviving are 2 special nieces, Elizabeth Evans and Mary Ellen Martin.                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Masonic services will begin at 1:00 PM on Thursday September 8, 2022 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home conducted by Morning Dawn Lodge #7 and followed by his funeral conducted by Pastor Alfred Holley. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans, WV. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 11:00 AM until the time of service. Military Funeral Honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the VFW #4464 Honor Guard and accompanied by Hunter Bragg. Pall Bearers will be, Allen Wood, Edward McGovern IV, Matt Mooney, Edward McGovern V, Bill Joe Angell and Cory Ralph Angell. Honorary Pall Bearers will be, Jesse White, Brian Russell and James Thornton.
