Obituary

Verlin Lee Swain, 95, of Crown City, Ohio, was lovingly reunited with his heavenly family on Monday, November 2, 2026. He was born on July 4, 1931, in Crown City, Ohio, to the late Stanley W. (S.W.) and Bessie Dillon Swain.

Verlin was a devoted Christian and a faithful member of Crown City Wesleyan Church. Throughout his life, he was an entrepreneur, building and growing several successful businesses throughout Gallia County. He had a deep love for the land and, following in his father's footsteps, devoted countless hours to farming.

Verlin also had a lifelong commitment to service. His service began in the United States Air Force and continued through his involvement in local government, where he served terms as Gallia County Treasurer and Gallia County Commissioner. He also generously gave his time and leadership as a board member of the Holzer Health System Board of Directors.

Above all, Verlin treasured the people in his life. He spent countless hours sharing stories, laughter, and smiles with friends and family, always offering a listening ear and sage advice to those who came to visit. His wisdom, generosity, faith, and dedication to his community will be remembered by all who knew him.

In March of 1986, Verlin married JoAnn Black Swain, who survives him. He is also survived by his sons, Rick (Carla) Swain of Rio Grande, Ohio; Jim (Pam) Swain of Crown City, Ohio; and Scott (Barbara) Swain of Gallipolis, Ohio; and his daughters, Amber (Gearld) Cade of Pace, Florida, and Ashli (Willie) Devault of Gallipolis, Ohio. Also surviving are his sisters-in-law, Evelyn Swain of Gallipolis, Ohio, and Joyce (Harold Kinniard) Leiter of Marysville, Ohio, and brothers-in-law Jim (Vivian) Black of West Mansfield, Ohio, Earl (Melanie Kurtzman) Black of Urbana, Ohio, and Charles “Chuck” (Toni) Black of Marysville, Ohio.

In addition to his children, Verlin leaves behind many beloved grandchildren, Rick A. (Jillian Brewster) Swain of Waverly, Ohio, Heather (Nick) Robinson of Columbus, Ohio, Matt (Becca) of Watauga, Tennessee, Karrie (Josh) Davison of Crown City, Ohio, Brian (Jenni) Swain of Crown City, Ohio, Misty Swain of Milton, West Virginia, Wendy Swain Borstein of Proctorville, Ohio, Donna Love of Huntington, West Virginia, Cynthia Kirk of Crown City, Ohio, Desirae Swain of Olive Hill, Kentucky, John Scott Swain of Gallipolis, Ohio, Alyssa (Levi) Ellis of Crown City, Ohio, Brooke Campbell of Crown City, Ohio, Chloey (Nick) Hicks of Crown City, Ohio, Trevor (Gabrielle) Bevan of Gallipolis, Ohio, Owen Bevan of Athalia, Ohio, Gavin Bevan of Athalia, Ohio, Logan Bevan of Crown City, Ohio, Sophie Bevan of Crown City, Ohio, and Bryson Devault of Gallipolis, Ohio.
