Hurt, Vesta

Vesta Mae Hurt (Cordell), age 98, passed peacefully on Friday July 15, 2011 in Columbus, Ohio where she had been a resident of Yorkland Care Center. She resided for many years in Gallipolis, Ohio. Vesta was an excellent cook; she crocheted beautifully and crafted fine quilts. Vesta was born on August 4, 1912 in Springfield Township (Buck Ridge), Gallia County, Ohio to Maud Armstrong Cordell and Herbert Cordell. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Leona Frances Smith, her parents, her sister Mary Josephine Austin, and brothers William and Howard Cordell. She is survived by her son-in-law Kenton Smith, her grandchildren, Bruce (Sheila Williams) Smith, Kent Smith, Leon (Sandra) Smith and Lisa Smith (Steven Hecker), great-grandchildren Bethany (Jawanza) Moore, Kevin Smith, Leon Smith, Jr., Tony Smith and Joel Smith as well as six great-great grandchildren Leah and Brianna Moore, Tony and Tyson Smith, Jasmine and Javan Smith, Imani and Karic Leon Smith and many friends and relatives.
The funeral will be held on Friday, July 22, 2011 at the Waugh-Hally-Wood Funeral Home, 810 Second Avenue in Gallipolis, Ohio. The family will receive friends at 11:00 a.m. with services beginning at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Reverend Edward Buffington. Internment will follow immediately after the service at Pine Street Cemetery.
