Obituary

Wayne Dale Bergdoll of Gallipolis passed away peacefully on January 4, 2023 at the age of 81. He was a beloved husband, brother, father, father-in-law, grandfather, uncle, and friend that will be greatly missed.

Wayne was born August 23, 1941 in Petersburg, West Virginia. He graduated from Paw Paw (West Virginia) High School in 1959 and then went on to West Virginia Wesleyan University, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in education in 1963. He was an educator and built a winning coaching career in basketball, football, baseball, and golf. He took his first job as a coach in Rutland High School in Meigs County as a head basketball coach and assistant football coach and ended his career at Southwestern High School in Gallia County. Career highlights include multiple league championships coaching men's basketball at Bishop Flaget in Chillicothe, Ohio. He maintained close relationships with his players who continued calling him coach for the rest of his life.

Wayne was an avid basketball fan, cheering his University of North Carolina Tarheels to six national championships over the years.

Wayne will be remembered for many wonderful things, especially his kindness, his generous spirit, and his indelible smile. His commitment to his family was unequaled and will forever be appreciated.

He is survived by his loving family, including his wife of sixty years, Janice Bergdoll, his sons Russell Bergdoll (wife Amber Bergdoll) of Point Pleasant, West Virginia and Todd Bergdoll (wife Wendi Bergdoll) of Upper Arlington, Ohio, Todd's children, Emory, Gracie, and Jackson Bergdoll, and Wayne's brother, Ralph Bergdoll of Miamisburg, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Betsy Bergdoll, and his parents Clarence and Ethyl.

Memorial services will be 1:30 PM Saturday January 21, 2023 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home with Pastor Christian Scott officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (afsp.org).
